Average Baby, 2010
Average Baby is a clothesline hanging with paper garments constructed out of baby care manuals, created in collaboration with mothers in the first Greetings From Motherland series of workshops. The centerpieces are two paper baby blankets of “erasure” poetry, in which words have been erased or grayed out from pages torn from the parenting manuals to create a new, “hidden” poem, uncovering a kind of visual map within the original page. The clotheslines also hold paper baby clothing. Items include paper onesies, dresses, t-shirts, a bib, a sleepsack, and even a nursing bra, complete with working snaps.
