The Way the World Works, 2010
The Way The World Works is an interactive installation of thirty-two blocks, similar to children's cardboard bricks, and was created in collaboration with mothers in a Greetings From Motherland workshop series. Each block serves as an oversized postcard from Motherland. On the side of each block is an abstract photograph of domestic life, and on the other is text culled from writings and interviews about our experiences during the first year of motherhood. Each 'postcard' has a faux postage stamp and postmark, while the sides of the blocks are collaged with found text and illustrations from parenting manuals. The blocks are designed to be touched by both adults and children, creating new juxtapositions and structures as the audience plays with the piece.
